Job Title: Payroll Technician                         

Department: Finance        

Report to: Controller

                       

Position Overview: The Payroll Technician will oversee the organization’s payroll functions, ensuring pay is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations.

                                           

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Identifies and recommends updates to payroll processing software, systems, and procedures.
  • Enters, maintains, and/or processes information in the payroll system; information may include employees’ hourly rates, salaries, commissions, bonuses or other compensation, time worked, paid leave and holidays, deductions and withholding, address changes, and other information.
  • Ensures proper processing of payroll deductions for taxes, benefits, and other deductions.
  • Issues, or reissues replacement checks or direct deposits due to payroll errors or final discharge.
  • Records and processes federal and state payroll tax deposits and returns.
  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Identifies and recommends updates to payroll accounting software, systems, and procedures.
  • Interact with Child Support entities for timely submittal
  • Account Payable entry related to payroll vendors
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Other Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
  • Proficient with payroll software.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all employee HR and payroll records.
  • Ability to interact positively and form relationships with professionals inside and outside the company.
  • Ability to work in an often ambiguous and always dynamic environment.

 

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred.

 

Experience:

  • Three to five years of professional office related experience required.
  • Prior experience within an HR or payroll role preferred.
  • Great Plains experience preferred

 

Position Base: Anchorage, Alaska

 

Wage Rate: DOE/Hourly
